Recently, I was in Lagos Nigeria, my hometown and saw a huge billboard that read “Shit (Trash) is Big Business”. I quietly thought about this phrase for a few minutes but fell asleep as I sometimes do when in deep thought. Later that week, my brother in-law Nnabyko brought this phrase back to memory when he talked about a man who started a business hauling away excreta from private sewers. “He is now a multimillionaire”, he said. Surely, trash is big business, I thought. Isn’t there a maxim that “one man’s meat is another man’s poison?”

When I started my career in Healthcare technology, I was handed down a dilapidated system. People said it was a technology that was being phased out and was meaningless. Well, 3 years and 2500 happy users later, that same technology was hailed as a big cost saver to the organization and a big driver to a paperless healthcare system. Yes, it’s called trash but you can turn it to big business. Trash is big business.
