The emails and calls stopped. An eerie quiet swept over my desk like the chilly winds on Mount Everest. I had just returned from San Diego dejected, after a big project of which its success was in large part because of the technical acumen, and personal sacrifices I offered. However, others took credit for it. Worse still, my name was offered up as one of the troublemakers. If that current situation was all I saw, then it appeared I had gone from being the man on the critical path of the project to be the scum of the earth. But thank God I also saw millions of people worldwide being inspired towards Jesus Christ, and that saved my life.

Seeing More than The Current Reality

“How far can you fall?” thought Joseph to himself. Just a few days ago he was on the critical path of Potiphar’s kingdom. All Potiphar knew was the food on his table; the rest, Joseph handled. And here he was, sitting in a rotten jail meant for political prisoners. If that career-killing jail was all Joseph could see, then yes, he had become the scum of the earth. But in addition to his current situation, Joseph could also see the dreams the Lord showed him as a boy. He could see clearly the promise the Lord made to his great-grandfather, Abraham. A promise of millions of descendants and that saved his life.

You are a Pearl in Heaven

Is it the assurance of thousands of dollars in the bank, or the hounding debt collector at the doorstep? Is it the title showing flawless career progression, or the depressing sign on local businesses saying: “No Vacancies”? If this earth with its pain and pleasures is all there is, then you truly are the scum of the earth. But if there is more, and there is; if the promises of God are yea and amen, and you believe it; if there is room for you in heaven, which Jesus has gone to prepare, then yes, your life is saved and secure – and eternal. Spiritually, you are not the scum of the earth. You are a pearl in heaven.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept- 1 Corinthians 15:19-20
